Mixing My Smooths & Crunchies

Greetings! It’s been far too long since I’ve blogged…things have been a bit tops-turvy over here.

Risking blending my GARDEN blog with my personal life….(which I kind of already did when I wished my dad a happy birthday and took a moment to discuss addiction on the 22nd of February)……being a mom of two 20’something-or-rathers can be challenging-emotionally & physically! They’ve been extra busy helping me earn my worry lines & grey hair over the last two weeks. It’s tough being a mom who cares! I’m sure my grand babies will add more as the years go by!

Anyhow, on to new news about the growing season….

I’ve officially caught up to my planting schedule. I finished planting Godetia, Strawflower, Honeywort, Basil and Queen Anne’s Lace – last night.

I do need to replant the Chinese Forget-Me-Nots, they didn’t do anything, and I might also redo the Bells of Ireland since they are struggling.

I believe the dirt I bought was the wrong dirt….of course I went with price, not quality – well, it was Miracle Grow – too much bark! It wasn’t even potting soil, so I don’t know what I was thinking to begin with. But then when we did buy the Miracle Grow potting soil, that still had a ton of bark in it, so I went to the local garden center and asked what they suggested. It ended up only being $1 more a bag than the MG potting soil, but it is from Canby Oregon – home of Swan Island Dahlia company!! If you’ve never been, you should really consider a visit to their Dahlia Festival this summer, their fields are amazing! Their displays are beyond any explanation I could even begin to describe!!

I digress, more about the planting– about the dirt from Canby- I currently forget the name of the soil, but I’m impressed with the content of it.

Interestingly enough, Floret Flower Farm needs to work a bit on their estimation of the number of seeds in a packet. I’ll put that detail on my 2019 Flower Attempts page soon.

I went to the local hardware store to pick up more lights and more heating mats – but they are sold out…with no known date of when they might be getting more. It was disappointing, they are a good resource and I enjoy being able to patron a local business and give them my business, but I kinda need supplies.

I looked it up on Amazon, which I’m not a big fan of, but I am a big fan of saving money. The lights are $6 cheaper, and the mats are $15 cheaper than at the hardware store. I realize that local, customer service based companies are few and far between and they have to make a living too, but I need my lights and mats by this weekend…so Amazon won this time. We’ll see if Mr. Wesley calls me back this afternoon, and see what happens when I have to break the news to him that I had to reach out to Amazon.

Hopefully, Amazon can deliver….according to Mr. Wesley’s website the manufacturer was backed up, so it’s possible that I’m out of luck! Crossing my fingers! I have more planting to do!

I think there will be some progress on the greenhouse this weekend, our winds and arctic blast have been taking a toll on much of anything getting done outside. The forecast is saying almost 50 this weekend, with no wind. Again, I’ll be crossing my fingers that we can move forward and I’m able to move my operation outside soon. I’ve now taken space up in the garage, thankfully hubby is very tolerant!

I hope you are all doing well! Thanks for stopping by! Hope to see you soon.
